Breast Implant Sizing – How Big Should I Be?
Breast Implants Comments Off
There was once a cigarette ad campaign whose slogan was, “You’ve come a long way, baby!”
The same could also be said for picking an implant size before a breast augmentation.
Time was, the best doctors had to offer were bags of rice you could slip into your bra to see how you would like a certain size.
Things have improved considerably.
Taking the time to try out what you think is a good implant size is really, really worth the time. Because the primary reason for breast revision surgery is after healing, the patient decides she wants a large size. And that means:
- Another operation
- Additional risk of infection
- Yet another healing period
- More costs
Your plastic surgeon will have some suggestions if you bring in some magazines pictures of women whose breast size you admire.
In addition to implant size, your choices will include smooth or tear drop shaped (both have up and downsides) and projection – how far out in front of you the new breasts will project.
Some women like fullness at their armpits, others do not.
Many cosmetic surgeons say that actual implant size is the least important consideration of what you will look like when healed. The surgeon will also consider your ribcage size, chest shape and existing breast volume.
The exact same implant will produce different looks on women, depending on their:
- Height
- Weight
- Physique
The amount of breast tissue you have available to cover the implant will also point you in a certain direction.
Many cosmetic plastic surgeons have breast implant sizers in graduated sizes that feel natural in a bra. You can try various sizes at home to find the best size for you.
And, while making an initial consultation, ask if that plastic surgeon offers sizers you can take home. Take your time, too, because you want to get the operation right, the first time.
Cosmetic surgeons says the size you choose will also depend on your activities; if you are a jogger, mountain biker, ice skater, spring board diving expert, ballroom dancer or other very active person, you may not want larger implant sizes which can change your balance point.
One thing’s for sure, though. You can now save the rice for cooking!
