It almost sounds too good to be true – take your own fat from places on your body where you do not want it and apply it to places where you desire more, ah, bulk.
If our meaning is not clear, we’re talking breast augmentation.
Known alternatively as Lipotransfer, LipoStructure, structural fat grafting, microlipoinjection, and autologous breast fat grafting, the procedure basically started in America but is more frequently done overseas, most notably in France, Italy and Korea.
That’s because some controversy still surrounds the procedure.
On the upside: there are no breast implants to break, leak or replace and no rejection takes place because the extra breast tissue is your own. But the procedure takes longer and it requires several months to see the benefits.
That’s not all. Only one cup size can be done in a single surgical session and some fat may be reabsorbed by the body. Very thin women may not have enough fat to donate.
If that weren’t enough, some critics say that dead fat can calcify and leave scars, blocking X-rays and mammograms. Proponents counter that imaging technology is vastly improved and can spot cancer, after all.
The key to the entire procedure is how the donated fat is handled. Paradoxically enough, the stubborn fat we spend so much time trying to lose is incredibly delicate outside the human body.
The leader in the field, New York City plastic surgeon Sydney Coleman, M.D., says there are strict requirements for taking, cleaning and reinjecting donated fat so that it will find a blood supply and live.
When the protocol is performed in foreign nations, it is known as “The Coleman method”.
(Watch Dr. Coleman discuss breast enlargement, using the patient’s own fat on The Doctors television show.)

First thing to look for on a plastic surgeon’s website is a sign that he or she does the procedure on other parts of the body, too.
For instance, fat grafting is also done — and done well — on:
- The buttocks to create more shapely rear ends (the “Brazilian Butt Lift”)
- The hands to hide the effects of aging
- Under the eyes to fill hollow places
- In a standard breast implant procedure to smooth the edges
- To correct lip augmentation deformities
- To better complete cleft lip repairs
