Breast Augmentation: Why Women Want It

breast augmentation Comments Off

Sigmund Freud could not figure out what women want. But some plastic surgeons have figured it out, at least when it comes to breast augmentation.

They want to please themselves!

According to a new study underwritten by Allegan -  a maker of breast implants – over 3,000 women who had received breast enlargement surgery were asked to reveal the reasons that lead them to their plastic surgeons in the first place.

Here are the questions the study group were asked. Was the surgery:

  1. To please my partner
  2. To improve my sex life
  3. To make me feel better about my physical appearance
  4. To improve the way I feel about myself
  5. To increase my chances of meeting a partner

According to NursingCenter.com, which carries the full study, the above questions were given to 3,221 women just before their breast augmentation with silicone breast implants in 2007. (Read more about the breast enhancement study.)

Here are the answers that came back:

  • Less than six percent put extreme importance on pleasing a partner. About one-third said pleasing the partner was not at all important.
  • O.K., take a deep breath guys. How about attracting a partner? Nope! 92 percent said that was not important enough to have breast enlargement surgery.
  • Improving a sex life?  Less than three percent voted for this one.

O.K. then, what are the most important reasons?

  • Over half were extremely motivated to have plastic surgery to improve their physical appearance.
  • About 60 percent said they wanted to improve the way they feel about themselves.  Only less than eight percent of the study subjects felt this reason was not at all important.

One year after the study subjects had surgery, about 96 percent reported they were definitely or somewhat satisfied with their breast implants.

And who were the women taking the quiz?

  • Average age: 36
  • 91 percent were Caucasion, while about 4 percent were Hispanics, and 3 percent were Asian. Less than 1 percent of patients who took the survey were African American.
  • Over half were married
  • Singles accounted for 20 percent
  • Another 20 percent were divorced or separated
  • One percent were widows
  • 70 percent were college grads or had some college education
  • 11 percent had post-collegiate degrees
  • 12.5 percent reported being high school grads

Why would you like to have breast augmentation?
